Upcoming GLAD Trainings
GLAD is a model of professional development in the area of English language acquisition and literacy. The differentiated strategies promote language acquisition, academic achievement, and cross-cultural skills. GLAD develops metacognitive use of high-level, academic language and literacy while teaching the California Content Standards. It is an instructional model with clear, practical strategies promoting positive, effective interactions among students and between teachers and students. The complete training consists of a 2-Day Input Training followed by a 4-Day Classroom Demonstration.
2-Day Input Training
Training in theory and research with practical classroom implications and applications, occurs over a two-day period. It covers the works of educators across the disciplines: reading, writing, brain compatible teaching, language acquisition, cross-cultural respect, primary language, and coaching. Research is directly tied to specific classroom implications, strategies and organization. Participants will:
· Understand the research and theory behind the Guided Language Acquisition Design model.
· Understand the GLAD approach to standards-based instruction through the use of standards-based year planning approach for unit development adapted from Wiggins and McTighe.
· Learn proven strategies and techniques that promote academic language acquisition and improve literacy.
· Be prepared for the second part of the training: The 4-Day Classroom Demonstration.
4-Day Classroom Demonstration
Seeing successful strategies with students is the most effective method of promoting change. The classroom demonstration session occurs in a classroom all morning for 4 consecutive days. Participants will observe one of the trainers working with the children, utilizing the GLAD strategies. The other trainer coaches the teachers who are observing in the back of the room. This trainer is explaining what is being done, why, and answering questions concerning the lessons. Afternoons are spent on feedback and collaboration such as initial planning with the trainers for the participants’ upcoming units. Participants are encouraged to bring any materials that will assist in planning (e.g., teacher manuals for Science, Social Sciences, and Language Arts, books related to a theme, district guidelines, etc.) Participants must first complete the 2-day Input Training prior to attending the 4-Day Classroom Demonstration.
